Harrison’s House – Support and Encouragement to Children

Harrison McKinion

Harrison’s House is a Christian ministry in the Triangle to children and teens with serious diseases and medical conditions such as childhood cancer, cystic fibrosis, autism, heart disease, diabetes, and other diseases. We began in 2013 with offering support and encouragement to children, their siblings, and their parents, and are expanding into a full 89-acre retreat with indoor and outdoor activities for these families during their treatment.

Every child just wants to be “normal,” even seriously sick children. While treatment for childhood and adolescent diseases is has evolved significantly over the last 30 years, and while how children are treated while they are in the hospital has improved significantly over the last 20 years, there has been very little improvement in child-life therapy for families being treated as outpatients. And this would include the vast majority of families with serious medical conditions.

Additionally, there is almost no help for the siblings of children who are seriously and terminally sick. Harrison’s House will offer the child and their siblings fun, family-friendly activities that help them take their minds off of their medical treatments.

Studies show that children and teens who experience activities associated with happiness and normalcy respond significantly better to their medical treatment than those who do not. This is why hospitals offer teen rooms, playrooms, video game rooms, and child-life therapy programs for hospitalized children. The problem is most kids with a serious medical condition are not hospitalized for the duration of that treatments. Harrison’s House is on the cutting edge of child-life therapy.

Helping Ben – PhD in Theology

Dear Sir or Madam,

My name is Benjamin Edward Zorn, a PhD student at Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary (SEBTS) and I need your help. First, a little background to introduce myself. I am an ordained minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ. I completed my Masters of Divinity degree in December 2016 and I am preparing to work on my PhD in Theology. I believe my calling is to teach Christian Theology in either a Bible college or Seminary setting. I have geared my entire education over the past 7 years to attaining this goal.

As I have been going through schooling, my goal has been to avoid accruing any debt so that I could go wherever the Lord Jesus would ask me to go. So up to this point I have worked multiple jobs to afford paying for my school so that I could graduate debt free. I have also applied for financial aid through the school, but I have not been awarded any funds at this point. However due to the increased academic rigor of the PhD program, it will be difficult for me to balance working multiple jobs while completing my school requirements. Therefore, I have found it necessary to reduce how many jobs I work from three to two. Due to this reduction in income, I will be not able to afford the entirety of my tuition this academic year.

The cost of my first year’s tuition, school fees, and books will be approximately $6,400. Based on my proposed income, I will only be able to cover $2,600 of this amount after paying my living expenses. I need your help to cover the remaining $3,800. If you are able and willing to contribute, please make a check out to SEBTS and mail it to Southeastern Baptist Theology Seminary, Attn.:  Accounting Services, 120 S. Wingate St., Wake Forest, NC 27587. To let them know that it is for me you will have to put my full name, Benjamin Edward Zorn, on the memo line of the check.

Thank you for taking some of your time to read about my life. I appreciate your assistance both through prayers and through financial support.

24The Lord bless you and keep you; 25 the Lord make his face shine on you and be gracious to you; 26 the Lord lift his countenance on you and give you peace.” Numbers 6:24-26 NASB.

Sincerely,

Benjamin Zorn
